Mumbai Metro One is introducing a new mixed-loop train operation on Metro Line 1 from August 10 to manage heavy passenger demand during evening peak hours. The revised operating pattern will increase train frequency on the busy Andheri-Ghatkopar section, where commuters currently face heavy crowds and long waiting times.
The 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro corridor, operated by Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL), is one of Mumbai's busiest public transport routes, carrying around 5 lakh passengers on a typical working day.
Under the new operating plan, trains on the Andheri-Ghatkopar section will operate at shorter intervals during the evening rush.
Instead of every train travelling the entire Versova-Ghatkopar route, alternate services will operate on a short loop between Andheri and Ghatkopar. The following train will continue to run along the full corridor between Versova and Ghatkopar.
This mixed-loop arrangement will allow Mumbai Metro One to add more services to the section experiencing the highest passenger demand without requiring additional infrastructure.
The peak-hour gap between trains on the Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch will be reduced from 3 minutes 20 seconds to approximately 3 minutes.
The additional short-loop trains will operate during the evening peak.
The first short-loop service will depart from Andheri Down Platform at around 6:23 PM, while the last such service will leave at approximately 8:23 PM.
Mumbai Metro One expects the revised arrangement to significantly ease congestion on the busiest portion of the corridor. More than 85% of passengers travelling between Andheri and Ghatkopar are expected to benefit from the increased frequency.
According to Mumbai Metro One, the revised operating pattern is expected to increase passenger-carrying capacity on the Andheri-Ghatkopar section by more than 20%.
The operator estimates that the additional capacity could accommodate around 28,000 more commuters, helping address the severe overcrowding experienced during evening peak hours.
The total number of weekday train services will also increase from 476 to 484 trips under the revised timetable.
While the new arrangement is designed to improve services on the busiest section, commuters travelling towards Versova will experience a trade-off.
During the evening peak, the interval between trains on the Versova-Azad Nagar section will increase to around 362 seconds, or slightly more than six minutes.
This is because some trains will turn back at Andheri to provide additional services between Andheri and Ghatkopar instead of continuing towards Versova.
Metro Line 1 is Mumbai's first operational metro corridor and remains a crucial east-west transport link. With around 5 lakh passengers using the line on working days, the corridor experiences particularly high demand during peak periods.
The line currently operates with four-car train sets, while plans to introduce six-car rakes have not yet materialised. As a result, overcrowding has remained a persistent concern for commuters.
The mixed-loop system is intended to make better use of the existing fleet and infrastructure by concentrating additional train capacity where passenger demand is highest.
The new mixed-loop timetable is aimed at easing pressure on the Andheri-Ghatkopar section during the evening rush while continuing to provide full-corridor services between Versova and Ghatkopar.
