In September, the All India IIT Council had reached a decision that the fees for M.Tech course in all the IITs across India must be increased. After which, a fee hike was imposed in colleges for the Master of Technology (M.Tech) course. The fee was increased from a meagre ₹25,000-50,000 to a whopping ₹2,00,000, which resulted in students expressing their disappointment and anger against the sudden hike.

As an aftermath, the students have indicated that they will stage a protest against the additional burden that is being levied on them.

According to the students, on September 26, the 53rd IIT Council meeting headed by the State HRD minister decided to approve a ten-fold increase in M.Tech course fee. Along with this, the council also decided on discontinuing the stipend to M.Tech students.

Meanwhile, the council argued that the students who only intend to bag a degree study M.Tech which leaves several brilliant students from coming to an institute like IIT. On the other hand, they justified that the fees have been increased to meet with the expenses faced by the institute.

Earlier, students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay had held a protest rally in the Powai Campus on Thursday against the huge fee hike among other new revamps in M.Tech policies.
