Mumbai University Signs MoUs with 2 US Universities; Aims To Promote Exchange Programs

During the "Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam 2023" event held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, on July 30, the agreements for the MoU were formally sealed.

Mumbai University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with two US-based universities. The agreements for the MoU were formally sealed at the event, which was held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

With this, they are aiming to promote educational corporations and exchange programs. The University of Illinois and St. Louis University signed the MoUs on July 31.

During the "Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam 2023" event in the presence of Dharmendra Pradhan, the minister for education, skill development, and entrepreneurship, Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, chairperson of the UGC, announced these MoUs.

Professor Kumar added, "These Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) are a testament to our commitment to internationalization and, thus, embody the essence of cross-cultural and cross-border learning towards driving research-driven innovation."

The two-day program was held on July 30-31, to mark the celebration of three years of the National Education Policy. It was organized under the guidance of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Department of Higher and Technical Education.

Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Professor Ravindra Kulkarni, Q. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ajay Bhamre, Registrar Professor Sunil Bhirud and Director of Student Development Department Dr. Sunil Patil and University of Illinois Professor Martin Burke and St. Louis University Professor Eric Embrecht signed the agreement.

Professor Ravindra Kulkarni said, “Global knowledge exchange and the advantages it offers to students, through exposure to other educational systems and the sharing of top teaching and research techniques, a new generation of global citizens will be raised via the exchange of scholars and students.”

This deal between universities will mend a way towards advancing skill development and learning opportunities for students.

The University of Illinois' main focus area will be on promoting educational cooperation through experiential and skill training, credit transfer, dual degree programs, associate degree programs, online and physical internships, and student-faculty exchanges.

This academic Memorandum of Understanding with St. Louis University will similarly include joint and articulated degree programs, dual degree academic programs, credit transfer academic programs, student exchange, joint teaching, and research activities, joint cultural activities, faculty professional development, and sharing or creation of educational resources and materials.

Apart from Mumbai University, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh will be joining hands with the Eurasian National University Astana, Kazakhstan; and The University of Lucknow will be expanding international collaborations with Brazilian and Malaysian universities.

This move of Mumbai University is considered a big step towards the internationalization of Higher Education.

Apart from this Mumbai will be coming up with Vertical University Campus (VUC). On July 19, the decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting. VUCs will be set up due to less space available in the city thus Maharashtra will become the first state in the country to approve such campuses. The VUC concept has been adopted by the United States (US) and other Western countries as of now.
