NMIMS University in Vile Parle, Mumbai, has taken strict action against student misconduct. The university suspended an entire class of BCom (Bachelors of Commerce) students for two days in the last week as a disciplinary measure.

The suspension was a result of a student trying to play music in class while a faculty member was giving a PowerPoint presentation.

The class of 180 students from Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce class was suspended after the professor reported the incident on Friday, March 24. It remained in effect for next two days Saturday and the following Monday.

On March 27, the notice was lifted, and classes resumed the following day. However, the university has put more stringent controls in place, such as restricting access to only authorised scholarly sites inside college grounds, to prevent Wi-Fi abuse. After the two-day suspension, students were permitted back inside as long as they kept quiet.

According to the university, since the second-year BCom (Honors) students started attending physical classes again after the pandemic, there have been a growing number of complaints of misconduct against them. Some students have been disrespectful, they leave the classroom without reason, and are not attentive in class.

Meena Chintamaneni, the pro-vice chancellor of the university, in a statement to TOI, stated that the school has a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of indiscipline on campus.

The professor ultimately decided not to teach this particular course due to frustration with the students' behavior. Students in divisions A, B, and C of SYBCom (Honors) were given the suspension notice for severe misconduct, upsetting lecturers, and failing to pay attention despite warnings.
