Amidst the pandemic, the University of Mumbai (MU) is to resume classes as it is getting geared up to reopen colleges after consulting local district collectors and disaster management staff.

Moreover, the colleges are to follow the guidelines set out by the UGC. According to reports, “Colleges can only open for half the student population and will have to call them on rotation. Physical and online classes will have to be conducted,” said a principal of a Ratnagiri college. However, the Bombay University and College Teachers Association expressed shock over the shifting the burden of such crucial decisions to individual colleges.

Earlier on Wednesday, February 3, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant announced that the classes for all non-agricultural universities, reputed universities, self-funded universities and their affiliated colleges in the state can start from February 15, 2021.

The state government has given permission to authorities for starting colleges, and the guidelines for which have been issued by the Central and State Government, which the universities will have to follow strictly in view of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

On the other hand, with classes resuming for standard 5th to 8th in most of the districts in Maharashtra, sources say that about 85 per cent of the schools have resumed classes. After giving permission to start classes 9th to 12th in the state from November 23, in the second phase, classes for standard 5th to 8th were started from January 27. The decision to resume school was given by the local administration. Accordingly, many Zilla Parishad schools were started in most of the districts.
