According to sources, the municipality has sent a proposal to the commissioner to start schools in Mumbai and surrounding areas from next Monday, January 18.

Earlier on December 29, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that all schools in Maharashtra are to remain closed till January 15, 2021, in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The BMC back in November decided to keep all schools across the city closed till December 31. However, the Maharashtra government had earlier allowed Classes 9 to 12 to reopen from November 23.

Moreover, several schools have resumed operations in other districts and areas of the state. Except Mumbai and Thane, standard IX to XII has resumed classes in other districts.

Varsha Gaikwad, State Education Minister, took to Twitter stating that 9,127 schools in Maharashtra reopened on Monday, November 23, in a safe environment as per SOPs. She further made a special mention for Amravati where all schools reopened. On the other hand, areas like Gadchiroli (92 per cent) Osmanabad (91 per cent) Satara (89 per cent) Solapur (87 per cent) Akola (86 per cent) Yavatmal (84 per cent) Latur (82 per cent) also witnessed a high number of school re-openings. Moreover, in 15 districts, the average number of school reopened was over 50 per cent.

On the other hand, in recent developments, the civic body of Mumbai has permitted city schools under the Cambridge board to conduct exams for Classes 9 to 12 offline, with all precautions as prescribed by the BMC, while schools of all other boards will be allowed to conduct board exams for Classes 10 and 12.
