The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed increasing the maximum duration to complete the MBBS course from nine years to 10 years under the draft Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2026.
Under the proposed amendment, students will get 10 years from the date of admission to complete the MBBS programme, including the compulsory internship. The existing limit was nine years.
The amendment proposes changes to Clause 21 of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. However, the rule limiting students to four attempts for clearing the first-year MBBS examination will continue.
The NMC has invited feedback and suggestions from stakeholders before finalising the draft regulations.
The proposal is expected to offer additional flexibility to students facing academic or personal difficulties during the course period.
