The students are left confused by the decision of the UGC to commence the academic session for the first-year undergraduate and postgraduate courses from November 1.

Moreover, the UGC guidelines have also directed the universities to complete all the formalities of the admission process by October 31. This comes as a surprise as several arts, science and commerce colleges had already started their sessions for the first-year UG courses earlier this month. However, professional colleges such as those offering engineering and law courses are unlikely to complete admissions before November 1.

Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Union Education Minister, took to his Twitter handle to inform the same. As per the suggested calendar shared by the Union Minister, the classes for first-year students of UGC undergraduate courses and UGC postgraduate courses will start from November 1, 2020, whereas the examinations will be held from March 8, 2021, to March 26, 2021.

On the other hand, back in July, the UGC had issued revised guidelines with regards to examinations and the academic calendar which directed all educational institutions in the country to conduct the final year examination by the end of September 2020.

On July 6, the UGC justified the revised guidelines stating that it adequately takes into account the evolving situation of the pandemic which is why it provides sufficient time till the end of September 2020 to conduct these examinations after following the prescribed protocols and procedures relating to the coronavirus.
