The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Mumbai unit has staged a protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s construction of a cycle track around Powai-Vihar lakes.

The AAP carried out their protest at Deer Park, alleging that this would be harmful to the environment and endanger crocodiles. They were seen holding placards and banners.

An AAP leader, while addressing the media, stated that the construction of the cycle track will threaten the Indian Marsh Crocodiles. Reportedly, in a press release of the party, they had said that Aaditya Thackeray has made a habit of treating the city as his playground.

It further added that Thackeray does not have any sense of public responsibility or environmental welfare. The Powai lake has a fragile ecosystem and is home to a rich ecological heritage.

The BMC had issued a press release on 8th October. They had stated that they will be using gabion technology which will reduce environmental degradation of the lake. However, they have disregarded its impact on the crocodiles, the release read.

The civic body on Friday to discuss the lake’s development formed a committee of state environmental experts. Earlier, Powai residents had also written a letter to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray expressing shock at the construction of the cycle track.
