Air pollution levels increased in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Badlapur and Ulhasnagar

According to a new report by Respire Living Sciences, air quality has deteriorated in many areas of MMR. Although air quality has improved in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, these cities are still plagued by pollution. 


Particulate matter (PM) 2.5 data for the period 2019 to 2024 were extracted using the AtlasAQ platform. An analysis of this data shows that 10 out of 19 cities in Maharashtra have seen increasing PM 2.5 pollution levels. NCAP aims to reduce air pollution by 40 per cent from 2019-20 to 2025-26.

The cities of Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad and Jalna are deteriorating in terms of clean air quality. Navi Mumbai recorded PM 2.5 of 61.80 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) in 2023. Also, the level is continuously decreasing in other cities including Thane, Badlapur, Ulhasnagar, Chandrapur, Jalgaon, Nagpur and Solapur. The PM 2.5 levels of these cities are falling. 

On the contrary, improvement has been seen in Mumbai and Nagpur. PM 2.5 levels in Mumbai declined from 49.75 µg/m³ in 2023 to 28.82 µg/m³ in 2024. Similarly, Nagpur's level has declined from 51.35 µg/m³ to 40.53 in 2023.
