There’s no doubt that the Aarey car shed construction has been politicized to a great extent. The Uddhav Thackeray government stayed the construction of the car shed in the disputed area immediately after coming to power. This was preceded by months of protests from citizens, NGOs as well as a handful of public figures.
Today, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has mentioned that the panel which was originally appointed to suggest an alternative site for the Metro 3 car shed recommended Aarey as the most suitable location for the site. Hinting at political motives, he demanded the full report be made public.
He further mentioned that the land owned by Royal Palms was being considered as an alternative. This was reportedly recommended by the NGO Vanashakti as well. Meanwhile, the Director of Vanashakti, D Stalin, said the site was suggested as an option.
“Without considering the ground realities, the Uddhav Thackeray-led government has stayed the construction of the car shed. What is the objective behind the stay?” Somaiya questioned.
The car-shed of Metro 3 was to be constructed at the Aarey area. However, environmentalist claim that this area is a jungle and a leopard with her two cubs were spotted in the area. There are also claims that various flora and fauna are found in the area that is usually found in the forest.
