In order to curtail the flow of effluents in Powai Lake, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) floated a tender worth Rs 16.45 cr to clear the hyacinths from the lake.

Ajay Rathod, Chief Engineer of the Hydraulics Department in the BMC, mentioned that with the floating of the tender the cleaning activity must be completed in six months. A tender in similar regards was last floated by the authorities four years ago. The authority is looking at means to hinder sewer water entry and have managed to contain a significant amount of it. Moreover, aerators have also been installed to permeate oxygen in the lake by the body.

These water hyacinths make those water bodies their home that possesses high sewage water. The said plant then moves on to taking over the entire top of the said body making it ardours for sunrays to penetrate to the aquatic life. Resulting in a reduction in oxygen levels, and death of the marine life.

At present, 25% of Powai Lake is veiled in water hyacinths which need to be brought down to 10%. The hyacinths and other floating garbage amongst the many substances will be cleared off employing a harvester or amphibious machine. It will then be discharged at a BMC specified site.
