In an attempt to prevent the death and injuries due to tree falls, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now reissued orders on maintaining trees along the roadside. The municipal corporation has ordered one-metre space between tree trunks in order to help them grow and assist the roots to grow.

Accordingly, BMC has now mandated to provide space on both sides of the road for tree plantation. In an issued circular on December 5, BMC has admitted to shoddy work by its Road Department in 24 civic wards.

It has been observed that while widening, resurfacing, and carrying out road improvement, no space is left around trees. This results in a lack of breathing space for trees... In such conditions, trees cannot grow properly and become weak gradually,” the circular said.

Environmentalist and Vanashakti member, D Stalin had filed a plea for open space around the tree trunks. He stated that BMC has been implementing the order but a really slow pace and thus, there was no significant change. Eventually, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta said concretising tree roots was a historical mistake and the BMC wants to undo it.
