The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring cities – Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Pune – with the possibility of heavy to heavy rainfall.

Mumbai witnessed generally cloudy skies with moderate rain today, Wednesday, September 14. In addition, heavy rainfall has been predicted for later in the day.

An official from Skymet stated that rains are only expected to increase around September 15 - wherein heavy showers may be seen in some parts of the city. Rains will start to recede from Friday onwards, September 16.

Elaborating further, IMD mentioned that an orange alert has been for three days of September 14, 15, and 16 in Palghar; for Raigad, September 14 and 15.

According to reports, in the past 24 hours, until 8 am on Wednesday, Mumbai’s island city received 41.20 mm of rainfall, the eastern suburbs received 39.89 mm of rainfall, and the western suburbs received 39.04 mm of rainfall, BMC said.

According to the Maharashtra State Disaster Situation Report Index, a total of 120 lives have been lost in the rain and flood-related incidents in Maharashtra since June 1 to August 1. A total of 95 persons were injured amidst the torrential downpour in the state.
