On the occasion of World Recycling Day, the Central Railway on Thursday, March 18, launched a new campaign 'Give Plastic, Take a Mask' to create awareness about the collection and reuse of plastics.

The campaign is being implemented jointly by the Central Government, the United Nations, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS) and Hindustan Unilever.

The use of disposable plastics is increasing the problem of pollution. Keeping this in mind, Central Railway has started plastic waste collection centres at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Dadar railway stations. All types of plastics i.e. bottles, polythene bags etc. can be deposited in these centres.

The mask is handed over to the citizens after the plastic waste is deposited in the centre. This will prevent the spread of coronavirus by distributing masks. The campaign is raising awareness about plastic waste collection and recycling.

Earlier, clean-up marshals of the BMC deployed in the K west (KW) ward - Andheri west, Juhu, Oshiwara, Vile Parle and Versova - are now getting those unwilling or unable to fork out the fine for not wearing a mask to do community service - beach cleaning and garbage pick-up. In October last year, the BMC had come up with this idea to discipline those found maskless, defiant and engaging in unsafe, droplet dispersing arguments with the marshals.
