While the people of Mumbai have been experiencing the heat for the past one week, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for Friday and Saturday.

This respite is to come over the weekends with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Moreover, heavy rainfall can be experienced in isolated places. For Raigad, an orange alert has been issued for Saturday, September 12.

Earlier on September 7, heavy rains lashed Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai in the wee hours. The downpour which usually falls with calm resilience reached a point where there were thunderstorms in the early hours. The people of Mumbai who have been suffering from the hot and humid weather conditions, therefore, breathed a sigh of relief as the rain hit the city.

In the month of August, the city experienced a good amount of rainfall. As a matter of fact, Mumbai came close to breaking the record set in 1958. Back in 1958, the city had recorded 1,254mm of rainfall at the Santacruz’s observatory whereas, in the year 2020, the city recorded 1,248mm which is a mere 6.3 mm shortfall.  With this rainfall, Mumbai also managed to break the record set in August 1983, when the city recorded 1,244 mm rainfall.
