The countdown to the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century has begun! The rare celestial event, which will be the second and the last one in the century, will last for an hour and 45 minutes on Friday, July 27. With India at the centre stage, the eclipse can be seen after 11:45 PM IST.

The moon will be perfectly eclipsed and will appear reddish due to the sunlight, called the Blood Moon. It will be in perfect alignment with the Sun and Earth, being in the middle of them. One will see the sunrise and sunset of the Earth lighting up the surface of the moon, over 3,50,000 km away.

The eclipse can be observed all over India in its entirety. However, cloud-cast skies can obstruct the vision. The eclipse can be sighted with the naked eye. Along with Asia, the event will be visible across, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.

The largest lunar eclipse of the century was on July 16, 2000, and went on for an one hour and 47 minutes. While, the largest lunar eclipse of the next century is forecasted to be on June 9, 2123, having a duration of one hour and 26 minutes.
