Central Railway (CR) was previously engaged in installations of solar panels, solar trees, and water coolers at Lonavala and Khandala railway stations. This is part of a new proposal to make these two popular railway stations capable of harnessing and using solar energy.

Authorities have already installed 76 kW solar panels at platform number 2 and 3 of the Lonavala station. Further, the station also has two solar trees containing LEDs that are powered by integrated solar panels to illuminate the garden as well as the main station area after dark.

Speaking on the decision, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar, said - “Lonavala and Khandala are most popular tourist spots. Lonavala station and its adjoining railway premises will completely run on clean and green energy.”

Meanwhile, at the Khandala railway station, authorities have installed solar panels on one of the level crossing gates. It is said that additional solar panels will be installed at the station.

This comes as Central Railway is facing a cash crunch and has also denied salaries for its employees owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the non-movement of trains.

However, domestic train operations have begun in some capacity across Central Railway lines, though it’s not accessible for all. A report from last month mentioned that more than 60,000 people travelled by local trains on June 17.
