Mumbai’s air quality worsened this morning, February 1, as it crossed the 300 mark and entered into the ‘very poor’ category.

As per SAFAR’s, the city’s air quality index (AQI) was 304. Meanwhile, the pollutant PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations were at 304 and 160 respectively.

It is pertinent to note that this came after a day of relative respite as the city’s air quality index (AQI) was 215 on Tuesday morning, January 31, in the ‘poor’ category. On Monday morning, January 30, the AQI was 297, also in the ‘poor’ category.

AQI of different areas of the city:

Colaba: 262; AQI - Poor

Borivali: 262; AQI - Poor

Mazgaon: 228; AQI - Poor

Worli: 180; AQI - Moderate

Malad: 256; AQI – Poor

BKC: 362; AQI – Very Poor

Chembur: 324; AQI – Very Poor

Bhandup: 314; AQI - Very Poor

Navi Mumbai: 310; AQI - Very Poor

Andheri: 305; AQI – Very Poor

Moreover, this comes despite a spike in the daytime minimum and maximum temperature in Mumbai. On Wednesday, February 1, India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Santacruz and Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 22.4 and 22 degrees Celsius; while the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.2 and 29 degrees Celsius respectively.

On the other hand, as per reports, a cold wave is likely to hit the city and surrounding suburbs by February 2.
