Cartoonist, Rohan Chakravarty, alias, Green Humour, who hails from Nagpur has curated a one-of-a-kind, interactive educational map that brings to light Mumbai’s native species and communities. The Ministry of Mumbai’s Magic in collaboration with locals as well as revered environmental organizations such as Waatavaran and Project Mumbai embarked on the journey of creating the interactive biodiversity map.

Whilst a static version of the map was launched in 2020, it was only on Wednesday, 30th June’21 that the interactive version saw the light of the day. In this clickable edition, one can gain detailed insights into a specific species’ status, habitat and much more. The map extensively covers the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, water bodies of Thane Creek, Mahim Bay, Vasai Creek and the Arabian Sea. It goes a step further to highlight 17 species of flora coupled with 78 species of fauna.

The map adequately addresses its aim to portray that there is much more to Mumbai than its hustle and bustle. It truly brings the city’s culture alive with its ode to Warli Art through its compass and the representation of the indigenous communities of Adivasis and Kolis. The exhaustive biodiversity illustrations depict several environmental aspects like the mangroves, wetlands, blue button, Zoanthid corals and much more. There is also a separate key for the endangered species discovered in Mumbai.

Apart from underlying Mumbai’s culture it also aims to propel citizens to take action and protect the environment. By educating young minds, it aims to reconnect Mumbaikars with the environment. It does through by acting as a comprehensive medium to attain environment-related data that includes, articles, scientific papers, details of organizations that protect the environment, fellowship for youth to find answers for public parks, podcast to build climate discourse and a virtual artwork gallery, “Make Art for Mumbai’s Mangroves”.

Since it compiles everything, one needs to know about Mumbai’s biodiversity, it aims to gain traction and inspire citizens to protect the ecosystem.
