Air Quality Index (AQI) is an indicator of pollutants in the air. If the temperature of an area increases, there is an early setting of sea breeze due to which the pollutants do not remain in the air for long. This phenomenon can be attributed to the improvement in the Air Quality Index in Mumbai.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) Mumbai's AQI was 74 and Navi Mumbai's AQI was recorded as 115 which comes in the bracket of 'moderate'. This marks the cleanest air recorded in 2019.

According to SAFAR, the westerly winds have led to the clearing of pollutants in the air. The sea breeze is settling in at the right time due to which the particulate matters are not being suspended in the air.

However, in areas like Borivali, Malad, Bhandup, Chembur, Worli, Mazgaon and Bandra Kurla Complex the AQI was recorded at 304 which is 'poor'.

Notably, in 2018 in Diwali, Mumbai's AQI fared better than the previous 2 years.
