According to latest reports, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Mumbai has dropped nearly to ‘Very Poor’ category at the beginning of the last month of this year.

On Tuesday, December 6, System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) recorded AQI levels in the ‘poor’ category of 297 at 9 am with several areas in the city.

Mumbai has been witnessing warm but hazy days even in the month of December.

Mazagaon recorded the poorest AQI of 349, followed by 314 in Colaba and 313 in Malad. While Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) had an AQI of 311 and Chembur 321, Bhandup recorded an AQI of 256, followed by 239 in Andheri and 201 in Borivali. Worli’s AQI was 162.

For most of the last few weeks, air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category affecting the health of many Mumbaiites, especially vulnerable groups such as children and senior citizens.

The minimum temperature recorded during the day was 23.8 degrees, three degrees above normal.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that the night temperature also showed a significant rise on Monday, December 5. The Santacruz observatory of India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 23 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above normal.

Climate experts attributed the poor AQI to the current weather condition. They also stated that by the end of this week, the AQI is likely to improve.

Mumbai will see partly cloudy sky for the next 48 hours while the maximum and minimum temperatures will likely be around 33°C and 22°C respectively.
