Mumbai was chosen as a member of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in December last year, joining top cities from across the globe. The mayors of the member cities have committed to enhancing investments so as to protect and restore trees, ponds, gardens, urban parks, and lakes in their regions.

The group has said that Mumbai, along with 30 other cities, will be greener in the years to come thanks to mayors furthering their commitment to protecting the environment. Further, the targets set with the signing of the C40 Urban Nature Declaration by the cities will see big increases in public blue and green spaces.

It is estimated that by 2050, more than 570 cities will face risks related to sea-level rise while more than 500 cities will struggle with water availability, and more than 970 cities could be facing extreme heat situations.

C40 Cities Executive Director, Mark Watts said, “Supporting and protecting cities' natural ecosystems is one of our most important tools for building resiliency against the climate crisis and creating the healthy, inclusive urban communities we deserve.”

Maharashtra Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Aaditya Thackeray said, “I am certain that Mumbai will be a shining example of how diverse ecosystems can thrive in urban environments to achieve inclusive climate resilience for all.”

The Maharashtra Government is planning an amendment to the Tree Act to protect mangroves and older trees while also avoiding the needless felling of trees.
