As temperatures continue to soar across several parts of India, with many regions recording temperatures above 45°C, doctors are urging parents to take extra precautions to protect infants and young children during the upcoming “Nautapa” period from May 25 to June 2 this year. Extreme heat exposure can significantly increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke in children, particularly infants and those below six years of age. Heatwave and “Nautapa” are raising temperatures across India, causing severe health risks. Many cities face water shortages, power cuts, and rising cases of dehydration and heatstroke.

Experts at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road explain that young children are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies are less efficient at regulating temperature compared to adults.

Common warning signs include excessive sweating, irritability, dry lips, reduced urine output, vomiting, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, rapid breathing, and high body temperature. Parents are advised to avoid taking children outdoors during peak afternoon hours, usually between 11 am and 4 pm, and ensure they remain in cool, well-ventilated environments.

Dr. Nitu Mundhra, Consultant Neonatologist, Paediatrician, and Lactation Consultant at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said: “Infants and young children are highly vulnerable during extreme summer heat. Frequent hydration is extremely important, especially for babies who may not be able to express thirst. Breastfeeding mothers should feed infants more often during hot weather, as breast milk not only provides nutrition but also helps maintain hydration and immunity. Parents should seek immediate medical attention if a child develops persistent fever, lethargy, vomiting, poor feeding, or signs of dehydration.”

Dr. Nitu Mundhra further recommends dressing children in light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes, encouraging regular fluid intake, and maintaining good hygiene during the ongoing heatwave. Regular bathing, avoiding overcrowded spaces, and monitoring body temperature can also help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Healthcare experts emphasise that awareness, timely care, and preventive measures remain the best ways to protect children during extreme summer conditions.
