The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for Mumbai and its adjoining areas and predicted heavy rainfall on Saturday in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts. The forecast also suggests that Mumbai will receive heavy rainfall in isolated places over the next 48 hours.

It has been raining in Mumbai since Thursday night and this is the first heavy rainfall recorded for the maximum city in this monsoon season.

According to Skymet, in the last 24 hours, Navy Nagar recorded 261 mm rain, Santacruz recorded 157mm, and Colaba recorded 169mm. It is expected that some of the areas in and around Mumbai would continue to record three-digit rainfall even today.

On Friday, there was waterlogging at various places in the city and there were also reports of traffic jams. With the prediction of heavy rainfall today, it is expected that the same may happen even today.

IMD has shared that there might be an occurrence of high tides of 4.57 metres at 11:38 am on Saturday.

Post the red alert was sounded by IMD, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged citizens to stay away from the seashore.
