Mumbai has overshot the normal date of monsoon withdrawal, which usually occurs by October 8. However, it has come to light that the withdrawal is expected to be delayed by one week, stated Skymet weather.

The extended session of the Monsoon is favouring few spells of rain and thundershowers lasting till weekend. Though, India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s airport observatory at Santacruz did not record any rainfall in the past 24 hours, but Colaba observed moderate showers measuring 19mm as on Wednesday, October 12.

Meanwhile, according to data shared by the IMD, Mumbai received more than 100 millimeters (mm) of rain between October 1 and October 11, which is quite unusual for this time of the year, said weather department (IMD) officials.

If reports are to be believed, the IMD said that in the last 10 years only four instances (including this year) have seen Mumbai receive more than 100 mm of rainfall in the month of October.

The city recorded the highest monthly October rainfall in the last decade (197.7 mm) in 2012. It was followed by 170.1 mm rainfall in October 2020 and 120.1 mm in October 2011. Whereas, October this year has recorded 117.7 mm rainfall so far, which is the fourth highest rainfall for the month in the last 10 years.

Going by the current rainfall, experts exclaimed that total rainfall could reach 120-mm if the monsoon does not recede soon.

There has been only 24 hours of heavy rainfall in October this year and the amount of rainfall recorded between October 7 and 8 is equal to the total monthly rainfall figures, IMD scientists reiterated.

Officials also predicted that light to moderate rains will continue in the city till the end of this Saturday and Sunday along with thunderstorms. Besides, partly cloudy sky, with warm and humid conditions are expected during the day.
