The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rains in Mumbai until the weekend.

While, the city is unlikely to experience heavy rain this week, Mumbai and Thane are likely to witness thundershowers on Wednesday, September 18, bringing some respite.

According to the weather bureau, Mumbai will continue to receive light showers between Tuesday, September, 17, and Friday, September 20, amid no active rain systems.

Over the past few days, Mumbai has been receiving intermittent spells of light showers. Data from the weather bureau shows between Sunday (September 15) and Monday morning (September 15), the Santacruz observatory recorded 30 mm rain, while the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 19 mm rainfall.

Meanwhile, the BMC’s automatic weather station recorded the maximum showers in the western suburbs at an average of 27 mm rainfall. In the island city division, 26 mm average rain was received while the eastern suburbs received 21 mm rainfall.

IMD’s five-day forecast: 

September 18: The weather is expected to feature rain or thundershowers, which will likely occur towards the evening or night.

September 19: The sky will be generally cloudy with light rain or drizzle throughout the day.

September 20: The weather will be generally cloudy with light rain.

September 21: Rain is expected throughout the day.

September 22: The forecast predicts rain for the entire day.

This month’s rainfall data:

September has been the driest monsoon month in the city, with an average 359 mm rain recorded in the month. So far, Mumbai’s Santacruz station has received 165 mm rain in September while overall Mumbai has recorded 2,597 mm rain since the onset of monsoon in June.

For the record, on an average, Mumbai’s Santacruz station receives 2,319 mm rain in the four-month spanning monsoon while Colaba station registers 2,095 mm rain.

Lake levels:

The total stock of the seven lakes soared to 98.64 per cent — which accounts to 14.47 lakh million litres — on Tuesday morning, September 17, as on 6 am. Last year, on the same day, the lake levels reached 97.12 per cent while in 2022, the water stock had reached 97.97 per cent.
