A day after the Maharashtra government unveiled Mumbai’s first climate action plan, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to form a Climate Cell in its next plan to successfully implement the MCAP on priority. MCAP is a working plan to fight climate change.

The cell is expected to get planners who have worked in the areas of climate and sustainability. Scientists too will be present on the panel.

Moreover, it will be responsible for implementing the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP), update the greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and perform a climate & air pollution risk and vulnerability assessment every two years, besides undertaking MCAP revision every five years.

In a business as usual (BAU) scenario and with no action or intervention, Mumbai’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are expected to reach 64.8 million tonnes by 2050, increasing 2.7 times between 2019 and 2050, the MCAP stated. With this, it will be slightly higher than the India-level BAU trajectory of 2.5 times.

Additionally, this cell will ensure that monitoring and tracking systems are in place at the earliest.

It is pertinent to note that a provision of INR 1 crore had already been proposed for the creation of the climate action cell, which will be a part of the department of environment within the BMC.

However, for its financial support, BMC’s Climate Action Cell will be part of a year-long capacity building and knowledge sharing programme with C40 and the City of Oslo to develop its Climate Budget.

For those unversed, MCAP has come up with an ‘ambitious yet achievable’ plan for 30% emissions reduction by 2030, 44% by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050 against base-year emissions.
