Mumbai Rains: IMD issues heavy rainfall warnings for next 3-4 days

On September 13, there is a possibility of extreme rain in the Konkan region and Western Maharashtra. In the next three to four days, there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in Marathwada and parts of Vidarbha.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, September 13, has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfalls over the next three-four days in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Madhya Maharashtra.

Moreover, there is a possibility of heavy rain in most parts of Konkan, Vidarbha and Western Maharashtra.

Besides, the weather department has also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Sindhudurg and a forecast of heavy rain at isolated places till Tuesday, September 14. 

Meanwhile, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and South Konkan — Raigad, Ratnagiri are under orange alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places till Wednesday, September 15.

The first week of September witnessed torrential rains in various parts of the state. Due to cyclonic conditions over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining area of Marathwada, heavy rains occurred at various places over Marathwada, Vidarbha and Konkan on September 7. In some areas, floodwaters submerged crops.

Fairly widespread rainfall with heavy spells is very likely over Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra in the state. The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Washim till September 13.

New low pressure is likely to re-emerge in the Bay of Bengal, which will intensify further west-north. Hence, rains will continue over the Konkan region and it is likely to increase in some parts from September 12. Similarly, on September 13 and 14, there will be strong winds in the coastal areas. 

On September 13, there is a possibility of extreme rain in the Konkan region and Western Maharashtra. In the next three to four days, there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in Marathwada and parts of Vidarbha.

IMD Deputy Director-General K S Hosalikar tweeted, “Latest satellite obs at 18.30 indicates dense cloud patches over Gujarat, Rajasthan, Vidarbha & isol mod clouds over parts of Marathwada & N Mah. Off the coast of S konkan dense patches are observed over AS too. Watch for IMD updates. There are severe weather warnings for Mah nxt 2,3 days.”

“Imp weather alert by IMD for next 3,4 days in Maharashtra, with higher impact on Konkan Mumbai Thane Palghar, Raigad and Madhya Maharashtra. In view of low pressure in Bay of Bengal further intensifying to Wel Mark Low and likely to further concentrate into Depression, moving WNW (west northwest),” he said in another tweet.

Rain in all places of Konkan till September 15

According to the department, there will be rain in all parts of Konkan till September 15. A warning of heavy rain has been issued in Thane and Palghar districts between September 13 and 15. There will also be torrential rains in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts for the next three days. Mumbai will also receive heavy rains this week. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Raigad district on September 13 and Palghar district on September 14. 

Heavy rains will continue in Pune, Kolhapur and Satara districts for the next four days. There is a possibility of heavy rain on the ghats of these districts between September 12 to 14 and a warning of heavy rain has been issued on September 13 at rare places in the ghats of the Pune district.
