According to the latest reports, Maharashtra minister for Environment and Tourism, Aaditya Thackeray stated that a “Climate Test” should be applied for new projects considering the extreme weather events.

Based on accounts, he was talking at the workshop held by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with the World Resources Institute (WRI) while assessing the flood risk in Mumbai.

Thackeray was quoted in narratives elaborating on how if newspapers are taken in the last few years, any weather event Mumbai faces is one in the last many years.

He added that when Cyclone Nisarg came close to Mumbai in 2020 while he was driving through the Sea Link, he couldn’t even see 5 feet ahead. This he said was unprecedented.

Considering this, he believes it is time that every project is peer-reviewed in the Climate Change aspect. The minister further elucidated that previously the disruption cities would transpire owing to wars.

This phenomenon he says has now changed with climate change impacting cities, therefore he opines that it's time that something should be done.

Thackeray recommends that the civic authority needs to consider if it is possible to conduct infrastructure works 12 months a year.

Reports quote him elaborating on how they cannot predict when it will rain or when a heatwave will hit the city. Therefore, the authorities need to consider if it is possible to keep civic works yearly and dwell into adequate mitigation measures.

It has been reported that the Shiv Sena leader believes that a single planning authority in the city is of prime importance to curating a long-term solution to mitigate extreme weather events such as floods and heat waves in Mumbai.
