Authorities from the Western Railway (WR), in a recently released state, informed that the department will be installing two wind turbines in Mumbai which will help in producing energy using train’s velocity. After thorough consideration, the expert team has finalized a piece of land near Bhayandar to install these turbines.

This decision currently is being taken as a part of the pilot project and was taken based on the number of train services planned on the suburban route. Outcome from the pilot project will be studied thoroughly to expand the project and take the next decisions for the extension, if successful.

A report regarding the same was published in the Free Press Journal which quoted an official from the WR who said, "The Mumbai suburban section of WR witnesses more than a thousand train services daily, with a high frequency, especially during peak hours. This will definitely increase the energy production capacity of the turbines.”

Revealing the science behind the same, experts said that the wind energy will be converted into electricity using these turbines, for which the aerodynamic force from the rotor blades work in a similar fashion observed in helicopters or the airplanes. As the wind flows from the blade, the pressure of the air from the other side of the blade reduces and this different in the air pressure often creates both lift and drag. As this happens, the force of the lift causes the rotor to spin eventually generating energy.

Data reveals that the approximate cost which will be spent to complete the project will be INR 10 lakh and the team anticipates finishing this in a month’s time. Officials also expect around 50 units of electricity to be generated per day.

On the other hand, WR also released a new timetable for the network which was implemented from October 1, 2022. This was decided based on the additional non-AC and AC services which were introduced, expanding the operations on the railway lines. Important changes have been made after considering passenger convenience and comfort.
