On Sunday, June 13, Mumbai witnessed light downpour with the IMD Colaba observatory recording 7 mm rainfall and IMD Santacruz observatory 0.8 mm.

According to reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) kept its orange alert for the day indicating heavy rains at isolated places were likely. For the week a yellow alert is in place indicating heavy rains till June 17.

Meanwhile, the monsoons continuing the rapid progress since the onset on June 3, has now covered nearly 80 per cent of the geographical area of the country within 10 days. On Sunday, the IMD informed that the monsoon has reached the doorstep of Delhi, where it is most likely to arrive during the next two to three days. The normal dates for the onset of monsoon over Chandigarh and Delhi are June 26 and June 27 respectively.

By Sunday, the monsoons covered the entire Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad and some parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and northern Punjab, covering nearly 80 per cent of the country’s geographical area.

On the other hand, Mumbai had earlier received 94 per cent of its average rainfall in June. Moreover, the constant downpour continued on Friday, June 11, waterlogging the streets of the island city.

Moreover, with showers continuing, the average precipitation is likely to be covered in the first fortnight of June itself. Since June 1, 474mm rainfall has been recorded in the city against the average monthly total of 505mm. In addition, meteorologists have reportedly stated that as much as 338mm of that is above normal for the period.
