On the seventh-day of Ganeshotsav, which was on Monday, September 25, as many as 17,187 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri have been immersed in various water bodies in Mumbai.

Officials further stated that of the total, 15,243 were household Ganesh idols, 1,758 'sarvajanik (public) idols and 186 of Goddess Gauri.

Moreover of these, 5,147 were immersed in artificial ponds set up in various parts of the city.

With this, the city has witnessed 88,000 out of the 1.48 lakh idol immersions carried out so far (60 per cent) this year in natural water sources.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said that no untoward incident was reported during the immersion of idols on the festival's seventh day.

In 2022, almost the exact number of idols were immersed in natural bodies by the sixth day.

BMC failed to ensure more immersions take place in artificial ponds this year as it has provided only 194 of the 300 man-made ponds promised; last year the number was 164.

As per a BMC release, 80,969 idols were immersed till 3 am on Sunday, September 24, comprising 1,410 'sarvajanik' or public idols, 71,821 household ones and 7,738 Gauri Ganesh idols. Of these, 32,509 idols were immersed in artificial waterbodies, comprising 581 public idols, 29,620 household ones and 2,308 Gauri Ganesh idols, it said.

The immersions took place in Girgaum, Dadar, Juhu, Marve and Aksa beaches and 73 natural spots as well as 191 artificial ponds created by the civic body.

Artificial lakes in Mumbai continue to see good response from citizens as the total number of idols immersed this year after the fifth day shows an increase of 173 per cent compared to last year’s figures.

Earlier on September 21, the city saw a rise in idol immersions in the artificial lakes by 14% after one-and-a-half day of celebrations.

Ramakant Biradar, deputy municipal commissioner, attributed the reason behind the spike in numbers to the citizen’s awareness towards protecting the environment.
