When Maharashtra is already reeling under a surge of COVID-19 cases, in a latest shocking news, large number of cases have emerged from Latur city.

Forty-four students of a hostel in MIDC area near Maharashtra's Latur city have tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, March 11, a health department official said.

Last month, the administration in Latur had implemented 'Janata curfew' on February 27 and 28 due to rising cases across the state. The district collector had stated that Latur is comparatively in a better position and the situation is under control,  there is nothing to panic.

The administration is ready to handle the situation, the collector added. However, to prevent the spread of the virus, the citizens are requested to avoid stepping out, except for essential services, on Saturday and Sunday. This way the virus chain can be broken, exclaimed the district collector.

According to reports, last month, 47 students from the same hostel had tested positive. The hostel, located near an English-medium school on the outskirts of the city, provides accommodation to students between Class 8 and 10, the official said.

After testing positive, these students were moved to a local quarantine centre, where they are being treated, he added.

Meanwhile, a total of 146 people tested coronavirus positive in Latur district during the day, officials said.

Of these, 91 are residents of areas located within the Latur Municipal Corporation limits and 41 patients have recovered from the infection and one patient has died due to it on Thursday, March 11.
