Doctors at Pael's Wadia Hospital managed to remove a 50 cm long hair ball from the stomach of a 10-year-old girl who was suffering from abdominal pain, restlessness and vomiting for the past few days. A gastrostomy was performed on this girl. The girl was found to have a rare disorder called Rapunzel Syndrome. This disorder occurs in about 8 out of 10 cases in children, teenage girls and young women under 30 years of age.
A 10-year-old girl living in Vasai was suffering from abdominal pain, restlessness and vomiting for 15-20 days. Her parents took her to some local doctors for treatment. But the diagnosis could not be made. When the girl's parents brought her to Wadia Hospital for treatment, the girl was found to have symptoms of constipation, malnutrition, weight loss and severe abdominal pain for 4-5 days. A medical examination revealed a tangle of hair in the girl's stomach. She was diagnosed with trichophagia (hair eating), trichotillomania (hair pulling).
The girl suffered from Rapunzel syndrome due to hair eating. This is a rare condition. In which a large tangle of hair gets stuck in the stomach and spreads to the small intestine. Rapunzel syndrome mainly occurs in young women with mental disorders. After the surgery, the girl's condition is improving. We were very scared as the girl has a rare Rapunzel syndrome. But due to timely treatment by the doctors of Wadia Hospital, our daughter got a new life, said the girl's mother.
