The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)  has just received over 2 lakh doses of the coronavirus vaccine that will soon be distributed to government and civic vaccination centres.

Private hospitals, on the other hand, are still struggling to vaccinate people due to the unavailability of doses. 39 of the 49 centres across Mumbai could not conduct vaccinations on Wednesday as stocks were scarce with most reserving vials for the second dose.

Officials mentioned that distributing vaccines evenly is also proving to be a challenge given that not enough stock is available to send vaccines to every centre in the city. This has unfortunately led to a decline in vaccinations across Mumbai.

“There are 130 vaccination centres and we are getting doses, sometimes as few as 20,000 and 40,000. It is a challenge to distribute such few doses among centres,” a civic was quoted as saying.

Executive Health Officer of the BMC, Dr Mangala Gomare said that Mumbai received 1.1 lakh vials of the vaccine on Tuesday, though she added that these doses are only to be distributed among public centres that offer free vaccinations.

“With the addition of 1.1 lakh doses, the city now has stocks to last three days. Private centres may not be able to vaccinate in full capacity till the supply is streamlined,” she said.

Only 36,315 people received their shots in the last 24 hours as per civic data with only 8,464 of these people receiving Covaxin. This particular vaccine appears to be facing a shortage while Covishield is making up for a majority of the inoculations so far.
