According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s data, two new cases of the Delta Plus variant of coronavirus have been detected in Mumbai.

A civic body official stated that both the patients are women healthcare workers. Of which, one of whom was fully vaccinated while the other was not vaccinated.

Out of two patients, one is a 28-year-old who was diagnosed with COVID-19 on June 28 after she had a fever and headache. She hasn’t taken a single dose of vaccination.

Meanwhile, another 57-year-old patient, who is fully vaccinated tested positive on June 29, but was asymptomatic. As per the BMC, she had taken both doses of Covishield.

With the new additions, the total number of cases reached three in the city and 23 in the state of Maharashtra.

In June, 21 cases were identified and within a month only 2 cases were reported from Mumbai. A spike in ‘Delta plus’ cases have not been observed. The unusual spike in caseload is not being reported in the areas from which ‘Delta plus’ cases were identified, said a state health official.

Meanwhile, a civic health official said that identification of the variants in the city is likely to increase further as the BMC is in the process of starting genome sequencing at its affiliated Kasturba Gandhi Hospital from next month, August.
