The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, July 12, said that the vaccination for pregnant women in the city is likely to start at 31 centres from Thursday, July 15.

A civic body official stated that it is a tentative plan. In addition, the BMC wants to start with medical colleges, maternity homes that are already working as vaccination centres, peripheral hospitals that offer maternity services and state-run vaccination centres.

There are nearly 1.5 lakh pregnant women in Mumbai while the state is estimated to have 20 lakh pregnant women eligible to get the shots.

Meanwhile, additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani mentioned that the state has directed them to start the drive from Thursday when other districts too are likely to open it for pregnant women.

The state held a meeting on Friday, July 9, where they instructed districts to complete training of all centres concerned, including private, by Wednesday, July 14. Besides, vaccination of other categories will be as per plan, he added.

As per the latest guidelines from the central government, vaccinations for pregnant women was to be rolled out in the state on Monday, July 12, at the public centres.

Moreover, the Centre has also prepared operational guidelines, a counselling kit for medical officers and frontline workers and information material for people to read and understand the risks and benefits.

The training for health workers for the same is organized where they will monitor the women for the next 20 days after vaccination. Health workers are expected to tell the benefits as well as side effects of the vaccines to these women and they need to take extra care if they have comorbidities.
