Mumbai’s Cama Hospital is set to open a Genetic Counseling Department on April 1, 2026, to provide diagnosis and guidance for hereditary diseases. The initiative aims to raise awareness about genetic conditions, which often go undetected.

The department will focus on early detection, counseling, and management of inherited disorders, offering expert treatment and advice. Services will include prenatal and newborn screening, helping families understand risks and make informed decisions regarding genetic conditions.

Key diseases such as Down syndrome, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and Turner syndrome will be diagnosed, while patients and families will receive both medical guidance and emotional support.

The department will be led by Dr. Shabana Borate and Dr. Kshamata Kindre, using advanced diagnostic tools and evidence-based approaches. Hospital superintendent Dr. Tushar Palwe emphasized that the new service will strengthen preventive healthcare, enable early interventions, and make advanced genetic services more accessible to the public.
