Mumbai has been witnessing a significant rise on Monsoon-related diseases. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s public health department, in the past seven days, there has been a more than 50 per cent increase in cases of gastro, dengue, malaria and leptospirosis across the city.

According to statistics, there were 429 gastroenteritis patients till August 13 which has now increased to 660 till August 20. Malaria cases have increased from 462 to 704 during the same period. The number of dengue cases have reached to 495, followed by leptospirosis at 217.

It is pertinent to note that cases of hepatitis have tripled over the same period. However, people under the age of 30 are particularly prone to hepatitis, studies show. Hepatitis A and E occurs in early childhood years in endemic regions.

BMC Executive Health Officer Dr Daksha Shah said most of the cases were mild. “If a person has been washed away by standing rain water, they should seek preventive treatment within 72 hours as prescribed by a doctor,” she added.

Meanwhile, a senior health official said it is too early to say the total number of cases spiked this year as they are not alarming.
