Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will meet representatives of the agitating doctors in the city at 1 pm today to find a solution to the ongoing impasse. Resident doctors in civic hospitals have been joined in their strike by doctors affiliated to the Indian Medical Association, crippling regular medical services. Only emergency procedures are being carried out in nearly all hospitals and clinics across Mumbai.

Meanwhile, ruling party MLAs have sought cancellation of the agitating doctors' registrations if they do not withdraw the agitation by the end of Friday. The chaos that ensued after the MLAs insisted on this demand resulted in proceedings in the assembly session being halted for fifteen minutes.

Minister of state for medical education Girish Mahajan told the state assembly this morning that the doctors have refused to resume duties despite the high court directive and chief minister's request on Thursday. They have refused to back down despite a written assurance from the government regarding their safety, Mahajan told the house.

Meanwhile, the doctors' agitation entered the fifth day on Friday, with doctors, medical college teachers and private practitioners also extending support to the agitation.
