According to sources, interns from government medical colleges and hospitals will go on strike next week in order to receive increased scholarships. Moreover, the strike will be attended by intern doctors from 18 government medical colleges and hospitals.

Currently, the salary of an intern doctor is INR 11,000. Since June-July 2020, 2,950 doctors in government hospitals have been treating patients suffering from the coronavirus. However, they have not received any additional remuneration. Therefore, these doctors are now demanding an additional scholarship of INR 30,000 to INR 50,000. However, intern doctors have become aggressive as the government is ignoring this demand due to which they are going on an indefinite strike from next week.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased the retirement age of health officers, doctors and deans working in all the civic-run hospitals by one year as a temporary measure in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

As per reports, the retirement age will now be 59 instead of 58. The civic body increased the retirement age of professors in the BMC-run medical colleges temporarily. However, the decision of continuing in service is voluntary, informed the officials. It said the decision is not applicable for those health officers, who are set to retire in the next three months.

This decision has come as a great relief to the doctors and professors who are on the verge of retirement. On the other hand, resentment is likely to be expressed among candidates who are on the verge of becoming deans, senior doctors, assistant professors and associate professors.
