According to BMC’s data, out of the 24 wards in the city, only 5 possess slums in containment. At present, 13 slums fall in the containment zone category this includes four in the K East ward, three in the M East ward, three in the S ward, two in the R South Ward and two in the H West Ward.

Since the commencement of the pandemic, one of the biggest challenges that the city has faced has been battling the virus in the slums. From March 2020, the city has sealed over 2782 slums to curtail the pandemic. The authorities were also lauded, for the Dharavi model utilized to limit the virus spread. Notably, WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had lauded the said efforts. The consistent efforts of the authorities have enabled the city to keep the rising cases in the slums in check. Moreover, the impetus provided by the vaccination drives has also helped limit the cases.

If one is to shift their focus on residential buildings that are sealed, 12 wards in the city haven’t managed to wipe their hands of the virus. 68 buildings in these wards are under containment, the majority of which are in the K West ward, D Ward at 28 and 11 sealed buildings respectively. The other ten wards, on the other hand, have limited their sealed buildings to the single-digit figure.

The BMC however, continues to warn people of the virus’s presence and urges them to not put their guard down.
