Is it right to severely punish students? Are teachers really ruthless in treating students for their mistake? These questions regularly make their way, when we come across stories related to the education scenarios, especially in rural parts of the country. 

One such incident has come to the fore front where Bhaveshwari, a student was asked to do 500 sit-ups at Kolhapur district’s Chandgad’s Kalgondvadi school, which eventually has now taken a toll on her health. As per reports, her legs started trembling due to excessive sit-ups her and she will have to now undergo treatment at KEM Hospital in Parel.

What was she punished for?

Bhaveshvari studies in Sandesh School of Kannur Budruk in the eighth grade. On November 24, 2017, she forgot to carry one of her notebooks to school and in order to punish her, school principal Ashwini Ashok Devan asked her to do 500 sit-ups. Following the order, Bhaveshvari took the punishment, but after 300 sit-ups, she gave up as her legs started trembling.

Two days later she was moved to a private clinic where she started recovering and later, she was moved to a government hospital. Now, she has been brought to Mumbai’s KEM Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, Kolhapur police, on Thursday have arrested the school principal under sections 323,325,336,337 and 506 of IPC.
