On Friday, January 1, Maharashtra recorded 3,524 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,35,636. Currently, there are 52,084 active cases in the state. With 4,279 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 18,32,825.

59 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 49,580.

Mumbai reported 631 new COVID-19 cases, 628 recoveries and nine deaths on Friday, January 1, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,94,067. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 8,005 active cases and 27,40,72 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,125 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 23,70,594 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 283 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,462 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, India reported 19,078 new cases, 22,926 recoveries and 224 deaths taking the tally up to 1,03,05,788 on Friday, January 1. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 99,06,387 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,49,218 in the country. At present, there are 2,50,183 active cases. According to the ICMR, 17,39,41,658 samples have been tested up to January 1.
