Maharashtra’s Medical Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Amit Deshmukh felicitated Dr. Kalyan Munde, who is the Head of Cardiology Department at JJ Hospital, for successfully performing a surgery on a two-month-old child.

According to reports, a Ventricular Septal Defect (VDS) surgery was performed on a two-month-old baby weighing 3.5kg in Mumbai’s JJ Hospital last week. However, this is the second such successful surgery worldwide at such an early stage so far.

The two-month-old baby of Rahul Rathod, a resident of Gulbarga, Karnataka, who came to Mumbai for job, was diagnosed with breathing problems and lack of sleep.

After a few tests and examination, it was found that there is a 6 mm hole in the heart of the child. Rahul Rathod told many doctors about his child's problem, but due to the size of the heart, the doctors refused to do treatment.

Rathod, a desperate father, contacted Dr Kalyan Munde of JJ Hospital in Mumbai. He then performed the surgery with trans catheter procedure. It is a minimally invasive procedure to replace the aortic valve in patients with severe aortic stenosis. This is less invasive than open heart surgery, and the procedure typically takes one to two hours.

Doctor said that the baby's condition is improving. The two-month-old’s diet and sleeping pattern are getting better.

Munde was honoured in the presence of Medical Education and Medicine Secretary Saurabh Vijay, Medical Education Commissioner Virendra Singh, Director Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, Joint Director Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, Deputy Secretary Prakash Surwase, and many dignitaries who attended the ceremony.
