In the first two weeks of August, it is witnessed that there has been a significant rise in the number of H1N1 cases, also known as swine flu, along with malaria and dengue across Maharashtra.

The highest number of patients have been detected in Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, Kolhapur and Nashik.

As per State public health department, from January till mid-August at least 1,449 persons were detected with swine flu and 43 persons died of the infection.

Of the total cases, 363 cases were from Pune, followed by 291 in Mumbai, 245 in Thane, and 118 in Nagpur. While among the deceased, 13 are from Pune, six from Nashik, five from Thane and four from Nagpur.

Besides, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s data, at least 138 cases of swine flu, 412 of malaria and 73 of dengue were reported in Mumbai in the last 15 days.

The number of infections has spiked this month compared to July, when the city had reported 105 cases of swine flu, 61 of dengue and 563 malaria cases, the official said.

However, cases of leptospirosis, gastroenteritis (stomach flu) and hepatitis have declined compared to last month, he said.

From August 1 to 14, Mumbai detected 29 cases of leptospirosis, 237 gastro and 26 hepatitis cases, as against 65 lepto, 697 gastro and 65 hepatitis cases seen in July, the official said. According to the BMC, swine flu (H1N1) cases that have symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting, were "increasing" in the city.

In order to curb the spread of such diseases, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BMC had issued an advisory guidelines to be followed by citizens mentioning about the disease and its symptoms in detail.

Swine flu has become endemic since the pandemic in 2009 and deaths are largely among the higher age group with co-morbid conditions. Since then, Maharashtra has seen 3,735 deaths due to swine flu, whereas around 35,407 persons were infected with swine flu in the last 13 years.
