Mumbai: Malaria Cases Hit Three-Year High This Year

This year, Malaria cases have reached a three-year high in Mumbai, according to recent civic data, the city has registered 5,032 cases between January and December 12, higher than 5,007 cases reported in 2020 and 4,357 logged in 2019, highlighted reports.

According to accounts, the head of the insecticide department, Rajan Naringrekar stated that nearly 70 per cent of malaria cases can be attached to the metro work. Adding that it is arduous to reach areas underground where the work is being undertaken. Some of the difficult regions for treatment include track, cavities and retaining walls, believes Naringrekar.

Nonetheless, in spite of the rise in cases, no fatalities were reported owing to the mosquito-borne disease. The majority of the cases have been registered in wards that include, G-North, E and F-South. On the other hand, in suburbs, other than certain areas in Kandivali, Borivali and Malad haven't registered as many cases.

Apart from malaria, dengue cases also saw a rise, with 857 confirmed cases being reported this year in contrast to the 129 last year. This signifies the numbers reaching the pre-pandemic level when 920 cases were registered in 2019. Moreover, in the last three years, dengue has claimed three lives consequently. 

On the other hand, leptospirosis witnessed a fall in death with cases remaining constant. In 2019, 11 deaths were reported, whilst in 2020 and 2021, eight and four deaths were reported respectively. Gastroenteritis cases reported till December 12 were 2,818, in contrast to the 7,785 cases seen in 2019.
