The CT scan machines in KEM, Nair and Sion hospital are outdated and many patients have to go to private hospitals or centres for CT scan. As a result, poor patients have to suffer financially. Keeping this in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to purchase the latest CT scan machines in all the three hospitals. In a recent meeting, work orders of INR 39 crore have been issued for the purchase of new CT scan machines. In the next three to four months, it is likely that the latest CT scan machines will be installed in these three hospitals, which will bring relief to the patients.


Every day, four to five thousand patients come for treatment in the outpatient department of KEM, Nair and Sion hospital of BMC, while many patients come to the accident department. About 100 to more than 120 of these patients require a CT scan. Hence, there is a long waiting list for CT scans in these three hospitals. Patients have to wait two months for a CT scan at KEM hospital. However, since CT scan is often required urgently, patients have to undergo CT scan from a private  laboratory. As a result patients have to bear financial burden. Keeping in view the suffering of the patients, orders have recently been given to provide new updated CT scan machines in KEM, Nair and Sion Hospitals. These newly procured machines will be the most up-to-date machines in the country. This will make it possible to observe finer details. 


Latest CT scan machines in the country

All the three machines being made available at KEM, Nair and Sion Hospitals are the most up-to-date machines in the country so far. These machines are of the Canon company of Japan, and these machines are of the type Canon Prima Aquilium. The previous machines used to have 120 slices, but the new machines will have 160 slices. Due to this, micro tumours up to 2 mm in heart, liver, pancreas, brain will be seen. Also, the difference between blood and pus in the body will be noticed immediately. 


The cost of one machine is INR 18 crores

The civic body has issued work orders worth INR 39 crore for the purchase of CT scan machines for KEIM, Nair and Sion hospitals. The cost of a CT scan is INR 18 crores.
