Patients wanting to undergo treatment for Cancer at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General (Sion) Hospital, will soon be able to avail benefits of the radiation therapy from the hospital.

As per reports, the hospital has invited tenders for the same and are expecting to finalise the decision by next week. The facility is being developed at an estimated to cost INR 60 crore and will benefit patients who wish to take the treatment for better health. Details regarding the same were given by Dr Mohan Joshi, the dean of the hospital, to Hindustan Times.

The report quoted him and mentioned, “We have earmarked the area for the radiation therapy department. We are floating tenders for the construction and buying equipment. Along with the department, we plan to have a 40-bed facility for cancer patients.”

Officials have stated that over 100 patients are being treated at the hospital’s cancer OPD every week, and once this facility is available, over 40 per cent benefit from the radiation therapy. Currently, chemotherapy is available at the hospital and with the addition of radiation therapy, the hospital aims to bring additional treatments under one roof thereby ensuring that patients can avail the benefits at ease and will not have to rush to other respective centres.

Mumbai’s Sion Hospital is run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and is considered to be one of the four tertiary care hospitals which offers a range of treatment. As of now, radiation therapy is available only at BYL Nair Hospital and with this addition, Sion Hospital will be the next civic run hospital to have radiation therapy facilities. Currently, the radiation therapy machine at the BYL is not functional and under repair, and officials are waiting for update for almost a week now.

Radiation therapy plays an important role in cancer treatment as drugs are administered to destroy cancer cells. On the other hand, chemotherapy in cancer treatment helps in killing cancer cells and shrinking tumours using high doses of radiation.
